History of Roll Call

In the year 1948, Henry J. Jennings, Jr., as Worshipful Master of Progressive Lodge No. 17, New Brunswick, New Jersey in an effort to bring together the entire membership for one evening, introduced “Roll Call Night”.  Roll Call Night was such a success that it was decided that the practice would continue.  In 1950, Roll Call Night was combined with a night of Re-Obligation and Re-dedication.

In 1951, M.W.G.M. Aldradge B. Cooper, Sr. (a past master of Progressive Lodge No. 17) made the Re-Obligation and Re-Dedication service part of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge’s program.  In 1952, M.W. Cooper recommended that the Re-Obligation and Re-Dedication service be observed statewide during the month of March.

Since that time, each succeeding Grand Master has proclaimed the month of March to be the month we observe Re-Obligation and Re-Dedication services.  This ceremony has been adopted by the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of many states.

To this day, years after the original idea was conceived, the members of Progressive Lodge No. 17, as well as other constituent Prince Hall Lodges, gather to answer when our names are called: Re-Obligate ourselves to the vows we have taken and Re-Dedicate ourselves to the principles of Free Masonry.
